She is portrayed in the Devi Bhāgavatam, Mārkaṇdeya and Varāha Purāṇa-s and described to have participated in the annihilation of asurās or evil-doers like Andhakāsura, Raktabīja, Śumbha and Niśumbha. Andhakāsura represents blind and senseless rage arising out of one’s ego and position. Raktabīja represents the innumerable thoughts that spring in our mind that stall our spiritual and material growth. Śumbha and Niśumbha represent the twin attributes to stick to the same old routine, continue to lead the same old ways of living and not bring about any changes in our lives towards our betterment. The attributes to look down upon others and have no gratitude towards the blessings received are also represented by these twin asurā-s. When She enters our thoughts and prayers, all the ingrate qualities in us disappear and we transform into our true selves.

In the Śrī Vidya tradition, Śrī Vārāhi and Śrī Śyāmalā, are the closest deities and advisors to Śrī Lalita or Mahāṣoḍaśi. Vārāhi is the commander of all forces of Lalita and Śyāmalā is the Chief advisor or Prime Minister of Lalita. In the Śrī Cakra, She is the guardian of the sixteenth circle or the Kiri Cakra. Her residence is an Emerald palace of Śrī Nagara. She is the Danḍini (Stick) Śakti of Śrī Māta. Likewise, Śyāmalā is the kodanḍa (sugarcane bow) Śakti.

Legends Of Varahi Devi

• Ma Varahi's Creation: The scriptures describe Varahi as emerging from Lord Varaha (the cosmic boar incarnation of Vishnu). Bearing a boar face and armed with a sword and chakra, Varahi is considered the fifth of the Matrikas a guardian deity for earthly protection and spiritual strength.
• The Shumbha-Nishumbha Demon Slaying: According to the “Shumbha-Nishumbha” story of the Devi Mahatmya from the Markandeya Purana religious texts, the “Matrikas goddesses” appear as “Shaktis (feminine powers)” from the bodies of the gods. When the demon “Shumbha” challenges Durga to combat, She absorbs the Matrikas into herself. It has been described in the scriptures that Matrikas dance on the demons’ blood after the battle.
• Ma Durga and the Slaying of Raktabija: According to “Devi Mahatmya” (a Hindu philosophical text describing the Goddess, known as Mahadevi or Adishakti) that deals with the killing of the demon “Raktabija”, the warrior-goddess Durga creates the Matrikas from herself and with their help slaughters the demon army. In the “Vamana Purana”, the Matrikas arise from different parts of the Divine Mother Chandika; Varahi arises from Chandika’s back.
• The Earth and Varahi's Role:In the “Devi Bhagavata Purana,” the Earth is considered the receptacle of all things moving and non-moving. After killing the demon “Hiranyaksha”, Varaha rescues Prithvi and sets her afloat on the waters. Assuming the splendid form of the cosmic boar, He copulates with her and impregnates her. The Earth then gave birth to the planet Mars (Mangal). Varaha worships her as Devi Incarnate. The Earth Mother replies that at his command she will assume the form of “Varahi” and easily support the whole world of moving and non-moving things on her back.

Maa Varahi is said to represent the vice of envy (asuya) in the same Purana. The Matsya Purana tells a different story of the origin of Varahi. Varahi, with other Matrikas, is created by Shiva to help him kill the demon Andhakasura, who has the ability – like Raktabija – to regenerate from his dripping blood.

Legends of Kashi Khand say that Mata is born from the fell down tooth of Sati Devi and the Varahi Devi in Varanasi is one of the Shaktipeeth.* She saves the city from evil spirits and demonic obstacles. When Mata Durga was fighting with the demons, then Varahi Devi was Her commander.
